What's in Flora
So, What’s in Flora?
We know that happy family life revolves around mealtimes, but food comes with a few worries too. You want to make sure they’re all eating enough, eating healthily and enjoying it too! And we understand that it’s important for you to know exactly what’s in the food you’re serving them. There are a few myths out there about what Flora is and how it’s made – but most of them simply aren’t true. Discover what Flora really is and why it’s good for your family.
What is Flora made of?
Flora is a plant-based spread made with simple, real ingredients. We use nutritious seed and plant oils including sunflower, linseed and rapeseed, and blend them with buttermilk (for a buttery taste), salt (just a pinch) and a few other ingredients, which we’ll move into now…
We have added to the Flora family the new Dairy Free Flora Freedom spread which is a good choice for those who favour a plant-based diet but want to add the indulgence of a great tasting dairy free spread to their meals. It is completely dairy free and contains no ingredients of animal origin, making it a spread suitable for vegans. It's free from preservatives, artificial colours and flavours. By carefully selecting and blending our fats and plant oils, Flora Freedom spread is a great tasting dairy free alternative to butter.
Why does Flora have some ingredients I don’t recognise?
A few of our ingredients have long names and sound strange – but the truth is, they all do simple things and you can find most of them in your kitchen cupboards. Let’s take a closer look at them.
- Emulsifiers: A good example is lecithin, which is found naturally in sunflowers and egg yolks. We use it when blending our ingredients – it works to hold everything together, just like when you use egg yolks when making mayonnaise or custard.
- Preservatives: These keep our spreads fresh and stop mould and germs. If you were making a spread at home, you’d probably use lemon juice to lower the acidity and keep it fresh for longer.
- Beta-carotene: This can found naturally in different foods, including carrots and pumpkins. We use it to give Flora a rich, golden colour.
How are spreads like Flora made?
The way Flora is made is quite straightforward. We combine seed and plant oils with a little buttermilk and a pinch of salt. Then we add a few extra ingredients – to help blend the main ingredients, stop mould and germs and give Flora the golden colour you know so well. In fact, it’s so simple, you can actually make a spread at home!
Is Flora good for you?
Flora contains nutritious seed oils such as sunflower, rapeseed and linseed – what we would call ‘good fats’. They’re all a source of omegas 3 and 6, which are essential in our diets. Our bodies can’t make them naturally, so we need to get them in our food. They’re especially important for kids, to help them grow and develop. Here’s a little more detail.
Sunflower seeds are full of good fats.
Rapeseed oil has around half the saturated fat of olive oil, plus it contains omegas 3 and 6
Linseeds are one of the richest plant sources of omega 3. They also contain omega 6 and vitamin E.
Is Flora just for spreading?
Flora is certainly delicious in sandwiches and on toast but there’s so much more you can do with it! There are lots of ways to add it to your food to ensure you’re getting enough omegas 3 and 6 – why not try it melting over tender vegetables or as a tasty jacket potato topping? And Flora Buttery and Flora Gold are great choices for your baking. See the whole range of Flora products or check out our brilliant Flora recipes.
